I applied a colour filter to my photo of an old horizontal oak leaning over the Gorge Inlet, steps from my door.I drew the tree, deciding where the bend in the tree would look best. This got erased several times until I was satisfied.I decided to work the bark of the tree, leaving white paper for the highlights. Then, I began the background, because some decisions needed to be made about the lightness of the tree in relation to the background. This is a closeup of the work so far. You can see that the dark background allows the tree to come forward, because it is lighter and brighter. Where the tree is dark, the background will be light so that there is adequate contrast.
